The National Association of Funeral Directors is today (20 May 2020) urging the Government to introduce a Crisis Funeral Loan to assist thousands of bereaved people having to unexpectedly pay for a funeral.
The NAFD has published a protocol to ensure that funeral directors and providers of care in a residential setting are fully aware of the risks posed when an individual dies in a residential care setting and is either confirmed to have had COVID-19, or is suspected to have had it.
Following consultation with the NAFD and others, Public Health England has published an update to its guidance on care of the deceased with suspected or confirmed Coronavirus (COVID-19).
Given the continued importance of social distancing and the significant risk of a second peak of infections, there are no planned changes to funeral services, in any part of the UK, at the present time.
The NAFD has commissioned the consultancy Europe Economics to produce scenario models showing what the future path of the UK mortality rate might look like to Sept 2020, especially as lockdown is lifted.
