Face coverings mandatory for indoor funeral services in England and Scotland

From Saturday 8 August, face coverings must be worn by members of the public:

  1. attending funeral homes
  2. attending indoor funeral services at cemeteries, crematoria, burial ground chapels.
  3. indoor places of worship.

in England and Scotland.

Amendments to The Health Protection (Coronavirus, Wearing of Face Coverings in a Relevant Place) (England)Regulations 2020 were published today. They can be read here: https://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/2020/839/regulation/2/made

Updated guidance was published by the Scottish Government. This can be read here: https://www.gov.scot/news/hospitality-rules-tightened/

The legislation does not appear to place any legal obligation on celebrants, funeral directors or their staff to wear face coverings. However,  local venues may implement their own rules. The Institute of Cemetery and Crematorium Management have provided guidance for venue managers, which can be read here: https://mailchi.mp/7493d8b4634c/face-covering-update-7th-august
